WTSCF Podcast #14-"Morning Dew"

A barely-known Canadian folk singer wrote this cautionary post-apocalyptic song (her first song) in 1962. In 1967 a somewhat obscure folk rocker rearranged it, wrote an additional verse and sneakily claimed co-authorship; an injustice that often goes unnoticed in the history books. Cruelly, most covers are based on this arrangement. The same year, the leader of a not-yet legendary band more radically rearranged it on his band's debut album, and added a key final line, but knew enough to claim no credit. This episode sorts out the song's meaning, its origins, its various paths and twists and turns and the many cover versions that range from folk to disco to industrial/goth. Enjoy.

  1. could you turn off the 'auto start playing' for the podmatic links? it is SO annoying when one visits this page and 3 or 4 of them all start playing at the same time. cacophony at its best.

  2. I'm so sorry...Podomatic has two ways to publish and one gives the "automatic play" option and one doesn't. Maybe they've fixed it since I've been gone.. I often forget to use the one that does give the option. I'll fix them,...

    2. Well, wonders never cease! I didn't do anything except ask the Podomatic folks how to turn off that option after the show's been published. Maybe they took care of something on their side rather than having to give me step by step details. Or maybe Mercury stopped being retrograde. In any case, look for a new episode in the days ahead and thanks for the nice comments!

  3. thanks for this great coverage of the history of 'morning dew'. connecting the jerry garcia soloes on 'today' and their re-use on the GD album version of 'morning dew' - that is a nice piece of detective work!

  4. I've decided to replace the embedded players with links--I can only seem to stop some of them from playing. I feel bad about the sonic chaos....
